The late Margaret Kilgallen was a central figure in the Bay Area’s mission movement. She drew inspiration from American, Mexican, and Latin American folk art. She was fascinated with hand made signs and posters. I find her work to be extremely personal. Each piece is emotional and alive. Kilgallen forever changed how I view art. Her work taught me that there is beauty in our imperfections. She embraces the imperfections of her technique, through the intended imperfections of her characters. She was one of a kind. In a world filled with war, starvation, and disease, Kilgallen still managed to see the beauty in everything. She was married to Barry McGee, another important figure in the bay area art scene. After learning she was pregnant, doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer. She refused chemotherapy so that she could give birth to her child. Margaret Kilgallen passed away only three weeks after the birth of her daughter, Asha. She was only 33 years old. Kilgallen was a gifted genius with a beautiful soul. I love her work and I always will.

“I spend a lot of time going over the line and over the line and trying to make it straight, I’ll never be able to make it straight. From a distance it might look straight, but when you get close up, you can always see the line waver. And I think that’s where the beauty is.”- Margaret Kilgallen
